Tom Boon began backpacking Oregon’s wildernesses in high school and earned his private pilot license before graduation. He wrote for a non-profit for fifteen years, and testified before the Portland City Council on its behalf. Tom learned to sail in San Francisco Bay during summer vacations and eventually sailed small boats from Oahu to Oakland during his summer vacations, all the while working as a freight train engineer for nearly four decades and remodeled four houses when not railroading. But Tom’s finest satisfactions come from watching his adult children’s manage their lives.
